SPRAY FOAM

Comparing Open Cell vs. Closed Cell Insulation

When you evaluate open cell vs. closed cell insulation, there are cost differences that you may consider when designing your next project. A light-density, open-cell spray foam insulation like Holcym Foam or BASF foam, can be installed at a significantly lower cost than a closed-cell foam in projects targeting the same R-Value* specification. Some restrictions may apply to interior space limitations.

    • Description text goes hereCan be applied at very low temperatures (as low as 50 F)

    • Adds wall racking strength as well as impact resistance

    • Ideal for continuous insulation solutions

    • Higher R-value* per inch – easier to accommodate high R-value* requirements in narrow spaces

    • Lower vapor permeance (can be a Class II VDR)

    • Can reject bulk water (ideal for flood zones)

    • Higher tensile and bond strength

    • Description text goes hereCan be installed at a significantly lower cost and target the same specified R-value*

    • Can achieve greater R-value* if not restricted by space

    • Lower raw material/resource use

    • Permits bi-directional drying

    • Will accommodate long-term creep and seasonal movement

    • Hydrophobic material

    • Air barrier and insulating material

WHAT IS Holcym Foam or BASF FOAM?

Since pioneering modern open-cell spray foam insulation, Holcym Foam or BASF foam has become the spray foam insulation leader and one of the most familiar insulation products among builders. Builders across the United States have come to trust Holcym Foam or BASF foam insulation for performance, quality and innovation.

Holcym Foam or BASF foam insulation is an insulation and air barrier material that seals walls, floors and ceiling cavities against air movement, including spaces around electrical outlets and light fixtures and where walls meet windows and doors. Holcym Foam or BASF foam insulation can provide an effective air barrier insulation to minimize air infiltration through walls and ceilings, preventing drafts, cold spots and energy loss. The performance of Icynene spray foam insulation means that humid indoor/outdoor air is restricted from entering the walls & ceilings and condensing, thereby minimizing the possibility of moisture entrapment & build-up within the wall & ceiling cavities. This is conducive to preventing building envelope failure due to moisture damage.

Holcym Foam or BASF foam insulation products include half-pound, open-cell and two-pound, closed-cell solutions which can be used separately or in tandem within a project to provide long-term thermal comfort and air sealing. Holcym Foam or BASF foam insulation products are installed by extensively training and licensed Holcym Foam or BASF foam contractors only.

Attic insulation

Spray Foam (Roof Deck)

From a performance standpoint, the best type of insulation is spray foam. There are two types; closed-cell and open-cell, aka 2-lb and ½-lb, respectively. They have insulation values of approximately R-6.5 and R-3.6 per inch, respectively. When installed properly, both types of insulation will fill all of the nooks and crannies and make for a perfect air barrier. When air can’t move through it, you have zero heat transfer through convection.

JM Climate Pro Material

JM Climate Pro Material is an unbonded, virgin fibrous glass blowing insulation designed with optimal thermal properties and excellent coverage and blowing characteristics.

This seems to be the most commonly used in new-construction homes and has an R-value of approximately 2.5 per inch. Installers use a large machine to blow it in. You can’t simply buy it in bags and spread it around yourself.

FIberglass batt insulation

Fiberglass Batts or Rolls are one of the oldest forms of building insulation. The fiberglass material can be cut to fit into any framed wall or ceiling cavity. Installation requires no special tools or machinery and there are no chemicals to mix. It is ready to install right off the shelf. This makes fiberglass a cost-effective insulation option. The batts are available in multiple thicknesses or R-values that are conducive to all building areas. Current fiberglass insulation is available in recycled or formaldehyde-free formulas. Fiberglass does not have the sealing abilities of spray foams, so it is recommended that it be installed with expandable latex foam caulk or sealant to fill framing creases and penetrations. All insulation forms are only as effective as the quality of the installation. When installed correctly, fiberglass batts are a very efficient insulation method.

Not only does glass mineral wool insulation contribute to cleaner air, it is an inherently "green" product in terms of assessing its environmental impact over its lifetime. Manufactured with recycled and renewable resources, every pound of insulation ultimately saves twelve times more energy than it takes to produce it. So along with greater energy savings, insulation delivers a measurable impact on our environment, reducing the amount of energy consumption and pollution.

SEAMLESS GUTTERS

Seamless gutters were designed back in the 60's to retain water without leaking during rain. Over the last sixty years, the seamless model has been perfected. Seamless gutters have many advantages over traditional gutters.

  • Eliminates water buildup around the building's foundation

  • Reduces the possibility of flooding in the basement

  • Protects the soffit, fascia and roof

  • Eliminates splashing which can cause staining around vinyl siding

  • Keeps rain away from the entry doors, patio doors, and sliding doors

Round downspout enhances and preserves your home in harmony with its intended design. Round downspouts and elbows are the typical downspouts used with half-round gutters

Scupper Conductor Head

A conductor head is a device used in roof plumbing to capture storm-water runoff from the rain guttering of a building. They are often used as architectural features on a building.

AEROBARRIER

AIR SEALING DONE RIGHT

AeroBarrier functions as an internal air sealing system designed to seal leaks in a building envelope of up to 1/2". The process involves aerosolizing a waterborne sealant and injecting it into a pressurized home. The sealant autonomously navigates to both visible and concealed leaks, forming a seal by accumulating across the leak surfaces. The application typically takes 60-90 minutes, and the sealant dries rapidly, allowing for swift system cleanup. This quick drying time ensures that construction can promptly resume, minimizing any disruption to standard construction schedules.

  • AeroBarrier may be applied at any time between rough-in and prior to occupancy. Although, the ideal time to apply AeroBarrier is rough-in or post-drywall. Other factors that affect install is the build process (i.e. vented or unvented attics) and the site’s climate zone.

  • AeroBarrier has sealed houses to as low as 0.19 ACH50. But the value is in the system’s ability to allow builders to seal a home to as tight as it is designed for. AeroBarrier can meet any IECC, Passive House, LEED, Well Standard, ENERY STAR or Net Zero requirement

  • AeroBarrier is an interior applied air sealing system that seals building envelope leaks up to 1/2". The waterborne sealant is aerosolized and injected into a pressurized home. The sealant is self-guided to the edges of visible and invisible leaks to create a seal by accumulating across the leak surface. The sealant is applied within 60-90 minutes and dries quickly, before system cleanup is complete. This ensures construction can resume shortly after the process is complete with little to no impact on standard construction schedules. The AeroBarrier system measures envelope leakage in real-time, enabling the system to dial-in specific air leakage requirements with precision and consistent results.
